Normal Girl
Welcome to Normal Girl Field Guide, a place where I document my sometimes fun, sometimes boring life.
Season 20, Episode 01: Normal Girl
20 March 2026 – What is it to be normal? An introductory episode.
Recently, I watched a documentary entitled Moonage Daydream. I’m not here to review that film or to discuss its themes. Instead, I want to begin this introductory Normal Girl Field Guide with a quote from Bowie that wholly inspired me:
“I think the search is the thing.”
The search, in this instance, is the constant striving to reach a point. Perhaps for Bowie it was with his music or his art, but more generally this search is for purpose.
Normal Girl Field Guide is about the search. This blog will take us across many topics, all relating in some way to being a “normal girl.” You may now be wondering what that phrase means, potentially the idea of it is even a bit upsetting. That’s okay. We’ve been trained to yearn for separation from normal––it’s not good to be one of the many, supposedly. I’m here to tell you that it is. That “one of the many” actually means you are an individual in a world so perplexing and vast that somehow, despite infinite differences and oppositions, we are one.
I’m a normal girl, and you are normal, too. For me, this means being freshly 20 years old and unashamed to love both niche and mainstream digital media, books, poetry, and music. It means I spend as much time as I’m able traveling and learning from others. It also, though, means that most days I do nothing but go to class, do homework, and eat a few meals. In other words, sometimes I am so boring.
I’m starting this blog to document not only the exciting and novel, but also the mundane. I want to foster a space in which all facets of being human, of being a girl, are normal. Because we all deserve normality and acceptance––leading us back to our search for purpose. Again, David Bowie provides me with the words where otherwise I may not have any:
“I believe that there is a thread of meaning running through my life at the moment, that I have no wish to break, and I feel it’s leading somewhere fulfilling and positive.”
Meaning is undeterminable. Nonetheless, we feel it. It drives our movements, our thoughts, our primordial and gluttonous desires. Normal Girl Field Guide follows the thread of meaning. It’s a representation of the ceaseless search that, fruitless or not, is exactly what makes our lives invigorating to live.
This field guide (or episode) is about laying out the thesis & heart of this project. Future episodes will all have this sense of life and search at their core, but they will examine an array of different subjects. We’ll get pop culture moments, book reviews, TV show reactions, travel diaries, day in the life articles, and more.
I’m sorry you all didn’t get to experience my first 19 seasons with me, but I hope 20 and onwards are some you’ll love. More importantly, I hope these future field guides are vignettes you can assuredly find yourself within.
